It was interesting to read next Marine Officer GPS related story. While out on a large training exercise, he was using his navigator for navigation of his 34-man platoon which were mounted on Hummers. He was doing some map work on the hood of his vehicle while the platoon was fueling up. They remounted and began to move.
He started to look around for his marine GPS, when he noticed it was on the hood of the vehicle. By the time he realized where his GPS was, it was too late. His vehicle was just cresting the peak of a large hill. His GPS slid off the hood while doing 45 MPH and crashed onto the asphalt. He was the first vehicle in the column, so several vehicles were following him. The GPS crashed to the ground and split into two parts.
He went to the bottom of the hill, stopped the vehicle, and ran back to pick up his marine GPS. He was sure it was broken forever. He reconnected some wires and used electrical tape to put the two halfs back together. He was sure it would not work. To his surprise, when he turned it on, it worked. Then he thought it would not be accurate. Wrong again. It gave him an MGRS grid just as fast and as accurate as it did when he first purchased it. He has been impressed with gear since he first used his GPS two years ago during a Combined Arms Exercise in the desert.
